Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Specifications and Sizes: This beanie pattern is graded for four head circumference sizes: Preemie (24 cm / 9.5"), Newborn (30.5 cm / 12"), 6/12 months (40.5 cm / 16"), and 18/24 months (45.5 cm / 18"). We will use a 4.0 mm hook for the body and a 3.75 mm hook for the appliques. Gauge: 16 sc x 20 rows = 10 cm (4") with 4.0 mm hook.

Step 2

Beanie - Crown: With 4.0 mm hook and fuchsia (MC), start at the crown working in a spiral (use a marker). R1: ch 3, 6 hdc in 3rd ch. [6] R2: 2 hdc in each st around [12]. R3: (2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc) x6 [18]. R4: (2 hdc in next st, 2 hdc) x6 [24]. R5: (2 hdc in next st, 3 hdc) x6 [30]. R6: (2 hdc in next st, 4 hdc) x6 [36]. For larger sizes, continue increasing in R7-10 as detailed in the original pattern.

Step 3

Beanie - Body and Edge: Once increases are complete, work even in spiral by making 1 hdc in each stitch. Repeat until the beanie measures 7.5 (9, 10, 11.5) cm from the crown. At the end of the last round, change to natural (CC) by closing the last stitch with the new color. With CC, work 1 sc in each stitch around for 3 (4, 5, 6) more rounds. Join with sl st and fasten off.

Step 4

Flat Hearts - Rows 1 to 4: Make 8 (8, 10, 10). With 3.75 mm hook and natural (CC), ch 3. Row 1 (RS): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, and 1 sc in last ch. Turn. [2 sc] Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in last. Turn. [3 sc] Row 3: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last. Turn. [5 sc] Row 4: ch 1, 2 sc in first, sc in next 3, 2 sc in last. Turn. [7 sc]

Step 5

Flat Hearts - Edging: Row 5: Skip first sc, 5 dc in next st, skip, sl st in next, skip, 5 dc in next, sl st in last. Do not turn. Continue in rounds: work 3 sc down left side to base chain, work (2 sc, picot, 1 sc) at base, work 3 sc up right side. Join with sl st and fasten off.

Step 6

Top Hearts - Rounds 1 to 5: Make 2. With 3.75 mm hook and fuchsia (MC), ch 8 and join with sl st to form a ring (leave a 15 cm long tail). R1: ch 1, work (2 sc, sc, 2 sc) around [12]. R2: (2 sc in next st, sc) x6 [18]. R3: sc in each st around. R4: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 2) x6 [24]. R5: sc in each st around.

Step 7

Top Hearts - Lobes: Dividing for lobes. Lobe 1: Work 1 sc in next 12 sts, join with sl st. Continue decreasing in spiral: R2: (dec, 4 sc) x2 [10], R3: (dec) x5 [5]. Stuff and close. Lobe 2: Join MC to first unworked st, repeat lobe instructions and stuff. For collar, join natural (CC) to initial chain ring and work 2 rounds of sc. Fasten off.

Step 8

Assembly: Sew the 2 top 3D hearts to the crown of the beanie using the long tails. Distribute the 8 (8, 10, 10) flat natural heart appliques evenly around the body of the beanie, then sew them in place with tapestry needle and thread. Weave in all loose ends on the wrong side.
