Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Materials and Sizes: This cardigan is worked in one piece from the neck edge down for sizes 3/6 (12/18) months. We will use Patons Beehive Baby Sport yarn in color A (Grey, 1 skein) and color B (Blue, 1 skein) with a 4.0 mm hook (US G/6) and 3 buttons. Gauge: 18 sc and 19 rows = 10 cm.

Step 2

Yoke - Start and Rows 1-3: With color A (Grey), ch 33 (37). Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and in each ch [32 (36) sc]. Row 2: ch 1, *(2 sc in next st, 1 sc); rep from * [48 (54) sc]. Row 3: ch 1, *(2 sc in next st, 2 sc); rep from * [64 (72) sc].

Step 3

Yoke - Rows 4-7 (Clusters): Row 4: With color B (Blue), work dc and clusters (3 incomplete dc closed together) increasing as pattern. Row 5: With color A, work dc and clusters in ch-spaces. Row 6: With B, repeat cluster increases. Row 7: With A, sc in each st and space [96 (104) sc].

Step 4

Yoke - Rows 8-11 (Clusters): Row 8: With color B, work dc, clusters, and increases. Row 9: With color A, clusters in ch-spaces. Row 10: With B, work cluster increases. Row 11: With A, sc in each st and space [128 (136) sc].

Step 5

Splitting for Body and Sleeves: Row 12: With color A, work dc distributing increases [144 (152) dc]. Row 1 (Split): work 21 (23) dc (left front), ch 2 (4), skip 30 dc (left sleeve), 42 (46) dc (back), ch 2 (4), skip 30 dc (right sleeve), and 21 (23) dc (right front).

Step 6

Working the Body: Row 2: work dc in each dc and ch across [88 (100) dc]. Row 3: work dc in each dc across. Repeat Row 3 until body measures 10 (11.5) cm from split, ending with a RS row.

Step 7

Sleeves (make 2): With color A, join underarm. Rnd 1: ch 3, work 32 (34) dc around. Repeat rounds in dc until sleeve measures 5 (7.5) cm. Change to color B for 3 rounds of clusters alternating colors B, A, and B. Finish with 3 rounds of sc in color A.

Step 8

Buttonband, Buttonholes and Finishing: Buttonhole band: work 38 (40) sc along front edge. Row 2: work sc and 3 buttonholes (ch 2, skip 2). Row 3: work sc in sc and ch. Button band: work same without buttonholes. Sew buttons and weave in ends.
