Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
Materials and Sizes: This romper is sized for baby 6 (12, 18) months. We will use DK weight acrylic yarn (100g / 298m) in tropical color (1-2 skeins), a 4.0 mm crochet hook, a tapestry needle, and 4 buttons (12 mm). Gauge: 17 sc x 21 rows = 10 cm.

Step 2
Back Lower Panel: Ch 17 (23, 27). Work sc and make the buttonhole band in R1 & R2. In R3, work sc across. In R4, increase 1 sc at each end [18 sc]. Repeat increases on alternate rows until R24 (24, 26) to finish with 38 (44, 48) sc. Fasten off.

Step 3
Front Lower Panel: Ch 17 (23, 27). Work same as the back panel but without the buttonholes. Repeat increases on alternate rows until you have 38 (44, 48) sc. Do not fasten off at the end; we will join directly to work the body.

Step 4
Body Joining: Join both panels by working sc along both sides and join in the round with a sl st [76 (88, 96) sc]. Work R1-R5 in sc in spiral, then R6 in hdc. R7: work sc in the third loop of each hdc around. Continue with sc in spiral from R8 to R21 (23, 23).

Step 5
Back Yoke: With RS facing up, skip 2 sts and work sc in the next 34 (40, 44) sts, leaving the rest unworked. R1: 1 sc in each st. R2 (RS): sc2tog at each end (decrease). R3: sc even. Repeat R1-R3 until you have 20 (28, 32) sc (Row 18). Fasten off.

Step 6
Front Yoke: Join yarn with sl st in the fifth unworked stitch after the back yoke. Work same as the back yoke for 18 rows until you have 20 (28, 32) sc. Do not fasten off to proceed to the shoulder straps.

Step 7
Straps and Ruffle: Ch 8 (10, 10) and join with sc to the back yoke for the first strap. Work sc across the back yoke, ch 13 (15, 15), sl st in 6th ch (buttonhole), and sc in remaining ch. For the ruffle, join yarn in short stitches of the body. Work 2 rounds of dc with increases, then 1 round of sc and picot.

Step 8
Finishing and Assembly: Work one round of sc around the armholes and lower edges of the romper for a clean finish. Sew the 4 buttons on the front yoke and front lower panel opposite their respective buttonholes. Weave in ends and block lightly.
