Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Materials and Gauge: We will use lightweight (DK/#3) cotton yarn in your preferred color. Crochet hook 4.0 mm, 5 buttons (14 mm), stitch markers, and tapestry needle. Size: Newborn (width: 17 cm, length: 27 cm). Gauge: 15 dc and 9.5 rows = 10 cm with 4.0 mm hook.

Step 2

Yoke - Start and Rows 1-4: Ch 37. Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch [36 sc]. Row 2: ch 1, *(1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st), rep to end [48 sc]. Row 3: ch 3, 1 dc in BLO of next 2 sts, 2 dc in BLO of next st, *(1 dc in BLO of next 3, 2 dc in BLO of next st), rep [60 dc]. Row 4: ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, *(dc in next 4, 2 dc in next st), rep [72 dc].

Step 3

Yoke - Rows 5-8 and Sleeves: Row 5: ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, *(dc in next 5, 2 dc in next st), rep [84 dc]. Row 6: ch 3, dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st, *(dc in next 6, 2 dc in next st), rep [96 dc]. Rows 7-8: ch 3, dc in each st [96 dc]. Row 9 (Sleeves): ch 3, dc in next 11 sts, skip 22 sts, dc in next 28 sts, skip 22 sts, dc in next 12 sts, join with sl st to ch-3 [52 dc].

Step 4

Body - Midsection: Rnd 10: ch 3, dc in next 51 sts, join with sl st to top of ch-3, turn [52 dc]. Rnds 11 to 18: Repeat round 10. At the end of round 18, fasten off and weave in ends. Measured from top of shoulder, the romper should measure 18 cm long.

Step 5

Bottom Back Panel: Mark 27 sts on back. Join yarn in right corner with sl st. Row 1: ch 1, dc2tog, 23 dc, dc2tog, turn [25 dc]. Rows 2 to 8: ch 1, dc2tog at ends, dc in middle. Row 8 ends with [11 dc]. Rows 9-10: ch 3, dc in each dc [11 dc]. Fasten off.

Step 6

Bottom Front Panel: Work over 25 front sts. Join yarn with sl st in corner. Row 1: ch 1, (dc2tog) x2, 17 dc, (dc2tog) x2, turn [21 dc]. Rows 2 to 6: decrease 1 dc at each end of each row [11 dc]. Row 7 (Buttonholes): ch 3, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1, dc in next 2 sts [8 dc, 3 ch-1 spaces]. Fasten off.

Step 7

Collar and Edging: Ruffle Collar: In front loops of Row 3 yoke, join yarn. Row 1: ch 3, 2 dc in same st, *(3 dc in next st), rep [147 dc]. Rows 2-3: ch 3, dc in each dc. Fasten off. Edging: Join yarn at back opening corner, work sc around. Make a 4-ch buttonhole loop at top and bottom of back opening. Sew 5 buttons to finish.
