Materials and Sizing: We will use Bernat Softee Cotton yarn in colors A (Blue), B (Green), C (Sandstone), and D (Gray). Crochet hook 4.0 mm and tapestry needle. Sized for 6/12 months (and 18/24 months). Gauge: 16 dc and 9 rows = 10 cm (4 inches) with 4.0 mm hook.

Granny Square - Rnds 1-2: Make 2 squares. With color A, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. Rnd 1: ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1). In ring work (3 dc, ch 1) x3, 2 dc, sl st in 3rd ch. Fasten off. Rnd 2: Join color B in corner ch-1 space, ch 4, 3 dc in same space. *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner; rep from * x2, 2 dc in starting corner, join. Fasten off.

Granny Square - Rnds 3-4: Rnd 3: Join color C in corner space, ch 4, 3 dc in same space. Skip 3 dc, 3 dc in space. *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner, skip 3, 3 dc in space; rep from * x2, 2 dc in starting corner, join. Fasten off. Rnd 4: Join color D, repeat granny pattern, adding clusters along sides. Join and fasten off.

Granny Square - Final Rounds and Seaming: Work 3 (4) more rounds in pattern following established color sequence. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Place squares wrong sides together, align stitches, and sew 2 adjacent sides together with whipstitch to form the top and back seams of the bonnet.

Bottom Edging: Rotate bonnet to work bottom edge. Row 1 (RS): Join A with sl st in right corner ch-1 space, ch 1, 1 sc in same space. 1 sc in next 21 (24) dc. Dec 1 sc over join space. 1 sc in each dc to corner, 1 sc in corner. Turn [45 (51) sc]. Rows 2-4: ch 1, sc in each st. Turn. Fasten off.

Front Border and Ties: Row 1: Join A at bottom edge, sc in side of edging rows. Sc in next 21 (24) dc, dec over central join, sc in next 21 (24) dc, sc in side of edging [51 (57) sc]. Rows 2-3: sc in each st. Row 4: ch 29, sc back along ch (first tie). Sc along front edge. Ch 29 at end, sc back along ch to finish. Fasten off.
