Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

Materials and Gauge: To crochet this puppet scarf (child size) we will use Red Heart Super Saver yarn in colors A (Bikini/Multicolor, 1 skein), B (Pink, 1 skein) and C (Orange, 1 skein), white and black yarn for eyes. Hooks 5.5 mm and 3.75 mm, stitch marker and tapestry needle. Scarf gauge: 14 sts x 9 rows = 10 cm in hdc.

Step 2

Step 2

Scarf - Start and Body: With larger hook and color A, ch 9. Rows 1-2: work sc [8 sc]. Rows 3-5: increase at ends on odd rows [12 sc]. Row 6: work hdc increasing at ends [14 hdc]. Row 7: work hdc in each stitch. Repeat Row 7 until the scarf measures 117 cm (46 inches) from start.

Step 3

Step 3

Scarf - Decreasing and Edging: Decreases: work 2 rows decreasing with hdc2tog and sc2tog at ends until you have 8 sc remaining. Fasten off. Edging: With RS facing and larger hook, join color C (Orange) and work 1 sc around the entire outer edge of the scarf for a clean finish.

Step 4

Step 4

With color B (or C) and 5.5 mm hook, ch 24, join in a ring. Rnds 1-6: ch 2, work 23 hdc around. Rnd 7 (Mouth opening): work 12 sc, ch 12, skip 12 hdc, join to first sc. Rnds 8-10: sc increasing evenly around [36 sc]. Rnds 11-14: work sc even.

Step 5

Step 5

Rnds 15-26: work sc2tog at ends on alternate rounds to reach 14 sc on Rnd 26. Rnd 27 (Nose): decrease to 10 sc changing to color C (or B). Rnds 28-30: sc and close the nose tip. Wrap yarn firmly around the base of the nose to shape and define the snout.

Step 6

Step 6

With WS facing and 5.5 mm hook, join color B in the mouth opening (Rnd 7) to work in the round on the remaining free loops [24 sc]. Rnds 31-33: sc. Rnd 34: decrease to 22 sc. Rnds 35-37: sc. Rnds 38-45: decrease progressively to 10 sc. Rnd 46: sc2tog x5 [5 sc]. Close.

Step 7

Step 7

Ears (2 per puppet): With color B and 5.5 mm hook, work in the round from Rnd 1 to Rnd 7 increasing to 14 sc, then decreasing to 10 sc. Sew to head sides. Eyes (2 per puppet): With 3.75 mm hook and white yarn, work in the round from Rnd 1 to Rnd 5 to reach 8 sc. Embroider black pupil and sew.

Step 8

Step 8

Border the cuff opening of each puppet by working sc and 3-ch loops. Insert the narrow ends of the scarf about 5 cm into the puppets' cuffs. Securely sew only the top layer of the cuff to the scarf, keeping the opening free for hands.
