Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Bag Body - Round 1: With an 8.0 mm hook and bulky yarn, chain 30. Round 1: Work 4 hdc (half double crochet) in the third ch from hook, hdc in the next 26 chains. Work 4 hdc in the last chain. Rotate work to work along the opposite side of the starting chain and work 1 hdc in the next 26 chains. Join with 1 sl st to first hdc, turn. [60 hdc]
Step 2
Body - Round 2: Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count as st), hdc in first st, work 2 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 27 sts, work 2 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, hdc in the last 26 sts. Join with 1 sl st to first hdc, turn. [66 hdc]
Step 3
Body - Rounds 3 to 26: Rounds 3 to 26: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, join with 1 sl st to first hdc and turn at the end of each round (work 24 rounds of even hdc without increases). [66 hdc]
Step 4
Handles - Round 27: Round 27: Ch 2, hdc in next 8 sts, skip next 13 sts for the handle opening, chain 27, hdc in next 20 sts, skip next 13 sts for the second handle, chain 27, hdc in last 12 sts. Join with 1 sl st, do not turn.
Step 5
Handles - Round 28 (Border): Round 28: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in next 8 sts, work 30 sc in the ch-27 space, sc in next 20 sts, work 30 sc in the second ch-27 space, sc in last 12 sts. Join with 1 sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Step 6
Pocket - Rows 1 and 2: The pocket is crocheted flat separately. Chain 27. Row 1: Hdc in the third ch from hook and in each chain across, turn. [26 hdc] Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st), hdc in each stitch across, turn. [26 hdc]
Step 7
Pocket - Rows 3 to 18 (Pocket Body): Rows 3 to 18: Continue in even hdc, chaining 1 and turning at the beginning of each row, working 1 hdc in each st across (work 16 more rows). Fasten off at the end of Row 18. [26 hdc]
Step 8
Finishing and Assembly: Center the pocket on the front of the bag (or on the inside if you prefer an internal pocket). Sew the sides and bottom of the pocket to the bag body using a tapestry needle and even stitches, leaving the top open. Secure and weave in all loose ends. Your casual tote bag is ready!
