Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

We use the abbreviations: sc (single crochet), sc2tog (decrease), st (stitch), ch (chain), sl st (slip stitch), R (round). Work in a spiral (do not join with sl st). Use a marker in the first st of each R.

Step 2

BASE ROUND 1: With 5 mm hook and Main Color (MC), ch 17 + 1 extra ch. 3 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in the next 15 ch, 3 sc in the last ch. Continue on the opposite side: 1 sc in the next 15 ch.

Step 3

BASE ROUND 2 (Increases): 2 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc in the next 15 sts. 2 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc in the next 15 sts. (42 sts).

Step 4

BASE ROUND 3 (Increases): [1 sc, 2 sc in next st] rep 3 times. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. [1 sc, 2 sc in next st] rep 3 times. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. (48 sts).

Step 5

BASE ROUND 4 (Increases): 1 sc, [1 sc in 2 sts, 2 sc] rep 2 times, 1 sc. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. 1 sc, [2 sc, 1 sc in 2 sts] rep 2 times, 2 sc, 1 sc. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. (54 sts).

Step 6

BASE ROUND 5 (Increases): 1 sc in 3 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 4 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 3 sts. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. 1 sc in 3 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 4 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 3 sts. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. (58 sts).

Step 7

BASE ROUND 6 (Increases): 1 sc in 3 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 6 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 3 sts. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. 1 sc in 3 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 6 sts, 2 sc. 1 sc in 3 sts. 1 sc in the next 15 sts. (62 sts).

Step 8

BODY (R 7-19): Work 1 sc in each st around, maintaining 62 sts for 13 rounds. The body of the bag will start to rise.

Step 9

BODY (R 20-23 - Closure): R 20: 1 sc in 11 sts, sc2tog, 1 sc in 29 sts, sc2tog, 1 sc in 18 sts. (60 sts). R 21: 1 sc in 10 sts, sc2tog, 1 sc in 28 sts, sc2tog, 1 sc in 18 sts. (58 sts). Repeat this decrease sequence until R 23.

Step 10

BODY (R 24 and Final): R 24: 1 sc in each st around (54 sts). Final R: Work sl st all around for a clean edge. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Step 11

EARS (2): With 5.5 mm hook. R 1: Magic ring 6 sc. R 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sts). R 3: 1 sc in 11 sts, 2 sc (13 sts). R 4: 2 sc, 1 sc in each st (14 sts). R 5: 1 sc in 13 sts, 2 sc (15 sts). R 6: 1 sc in each st (15 sts).

Step 12

ASSEMBLY (Eyes and Nose): Sew the buttons (eyes) between R 14 and R 15 (approx. 8 sts apart), folding the bag to center. Embroider the nose (brown yarn) between R 10 and R 13, and the cheeks (pink yarn) below the eyes.

Step 13

ASSEMBLY (Ears and Strap): Sew the open edge of the ears and attach them to the bag between R 20 and R 23, adding extra stitches to the back center for firmness. The strap is crocheted separately (Romanian Cord) and sewn to the bag (approx. 45″).
