Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

Side Motifs - Rounds 1 and 2: Make 3 motifs with Color A (Silver Sea) and 3 with Color B (Scarlet Sands) using a 5.5 mm hook. Chain 4, join in a ring with sl st. Round 1: Ch 6 (counts as 1 dc + ch-3 space), (3 dc, ch 3) 3 times, work 2 dc in ring, close with sl st. Round 2: Sl st into ch-3 space, ch 6, 3 dc in same space, *(ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next space) repeat twice, ch 1, 2 dc in first space, join with sl st.

Step 2

Step 2

Side Motifs - Rounds 3 to 5 (Square Body): Round 3: Sl st into ch-3 space, ch 6, 3 dc in same space, *(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in corner) repeat around, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in first corner, join with sl st. Rounds 4 and 5: Follow same sequence, working 3 dc in each side ch-1 space and (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corners. Fasten off after Rnd 5. Make 6 squares total.

Step 3

Step 3

Motifs Joining & Border: Sew the squares together with invisible stitches to form two side strips of 3 motifs each. For the border of each strip, join MC (Black) with sl st in one corner. Row 1: Ch 1, work sc evenly along the edge (1 sc in each dc and ch-1 space, and 2 sc in ch-3 corner spaces). Total: 149 sc. Repeat for the other strip.

Step 4

Step 4

Bag Base (Front/Back Panels): The body is worked in two large pieces (which include the base and front/back panels) using a 4.5 mm hook. With MC (Black), chain 60. Row 1 (RS): Work 1 sc in second ch from hook and in each chain across, turn. [59 sc] Row 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc across, turn. Repeat Row 2 until the base measures 6" (15 cm) from start, ending on WS.

Step 5

Step 5

Granny Stripes - Rows 1 and 2: Change to 5.5 mm hook and work granny stripes alternating 2 rows of Color A and 2 of Color B. Row 1: With A, ch 2, 1 dc in first sc, skip 1 sc, *(3 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc) rep to last 3 sc, 3 dc in next sc, skip 1 sc, 1 dc in last sc, turn. Row 2: With A, ch 2, 1 dc in first dc, 1 dc between first dc and next group, *(skip 3 dc, 3 dc in space before next group) rep around, 1 dc in last dc, turn.

Step 6

Step 6

Granny Stripes - Row 3 & Repetitions: Row 3: Join Color B, ch 2, 1 dc in first dc, skip 1 dc, 3 dc in space, *(skip 3 dc, 3 dc in space) rep to last 2 dc, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in last dc, turn. Continue granny stripe sequence (2 rows A, 2 rows B) repeating rows 2 and 3 until work measures 21" (53.5 cm) from start. Fasten off. Make a second matching piece.

Step 7

Step 7

Panels Joining & Side Border: Sew front and back bag panels together at base using invisible stitches. With 5.5 mm hook, join MC (Black) with sl st to top-left corner of front panel. Work 149 sc evenly along the long side edge. Repeat the same on the opposite side of the bag.

Step 8

Step 8

Final Assembly & Handles: With WS facing out, align the side motif strips with the bag sides. Join MC and work 1 row of sc through both layers to join panels to sides (points A to C, and D to F). For handle tabs (make 2): with MC and 4.5 mm hook, chain 23, work sc back and forth until tab measures 3" (7.5 cm). Fold tabs around wooden handles and sew securely to top center of bag.
