Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
Body Start (Round 1): With a 3 mm hook and light brown yarn, start with a slip knot and chain 25. Round 1: Starting in the third ch from hook, work 1 hdc inc, 21 hdc, 4 hdc in the last chain, turn to work along the opposite side of the starting chain, work 21 hdc, 1 hdc inc, and close with 1 sl st in the first hdc. Step 2
Body - Round 2: Ch 1, work 1 hdc, 1 hdc inc, 21 hdc, (1 hdc, 1 hdc inc) twice, 22 hdc, 1 hdc inc, and close with 1 sl st in the first hdc. [54 hdc]

Step 3
Body - Rounds 3 to 10: Round 3 to 10: Ch 1, work 54 hdc around and close with 1 sl st in the first stitch of each round. Work a total of 8 rounds without making any increases. [54 hdc]

Step 4
Body - Round 11 (Edge Finish): Round 11: Ch 1, work 5 sc, (skip 2 sc, 2 sc together, skip 4 sc, 3 sc) three times, work 16 sc and close with 1 sl st. Cut yarn and fasten off. [36 sc]

Step 5
Flap - Rows 1 to 5: Start in the second to last sc of Round 11, working from right to left. Row 1: Ch 1 and work 13 sc. Rows 2 to 5: Ch 1, turn, and work 13 sc across each row.

Step 6
Flap - Rows 6 and 7 (Standard): Row 6: Ch 1, turn, work 1 dec, 9 sc, 1 dec. [11 sc] Row 7: Ch 1, turn, work 1 dec, 7 sc, 1 dec. [9 sc] If using this standard flap, sew snap fasteners to secure the bag.

Step 7
Buttonhole Option (Alternative Row 7): If you prefer a traditional button, work Row 7 as follows: ch 1, turn, work 1 dec, 2 sc, skip 3 sc, ch 4 (adjust chain length to button size), 2 sc, 1 dec.

Step 8
Flap Border and Finishing: Work the border around: 7 sc on the first side, 9 sc on the top edge of Row 7 (if you used the buttonhole option, work 3 sc, 1 sc in each ch, 3 sc), and 7 sc on the third side. Fasten off and weave in ends. Sew snaps or button to body.
