Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
IMPORTANT: Replace the first single crochet at the beginning of each round with 1 chain stitch; the round ends with 1 slip stitch into this chain. This is not explained for each round in the text, but every round starts and ends this way.

Step 2
COLOR PATTERN: See charts A.1 and A.2. The charts show the colors of the pattern. 1 square = 1 single crochet.

Step 3
COLOR CHANGE: When changing colors, work as follows: Work the last single crochet with the first color but do not make the final yarn over. Switch to the next color and work the last yarn over with the new color, then continue with the next single crochet.

Step 4
DOUBLE YARN: Use yarn from both the inside and outside of the skein. When changing skeins, it’s a good idea not to change both strands at the same time – this prevents the join from becoming too thick.

Step 5
The basket is worked in the round from the center of the base upward. The entire basket is crocheted using 2 strands of each color.

Step 6
BASE: Work 4 chain stitches with 2 strands of dark red (raspberry) yarn and form a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain. Read the WORKING INSTRUCTIONS, COLOR CHANGE, and DOUBLE YARN TIP before continuing.

Step 7
Work A.1 in the round as follows (6 repetitions of A.1 per round).

Step 8
ROUND 1: Work 6 single crochets around the ring (this is the first row of A.1).

Step 9
ROUND 2: Work 2 single crochets in each stitch = 12 single crochets.

Step 10
ROUND 3: Work * 1 single crochet in the first stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch *, repeat from *to* around = 18 single crochets. Remember to keep the same gauge as the sample.

Step 11
ROUND 4: Work * 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch *, repeat from *to* around = 24 single crochets.

Step 12
Continue working single crochets in the round following A.1, increasing 6 single crochets per round. In each round, work 1 more single crochet between each increase.

Step 13
When A.1 is finished, there will be 84 stitches in the round. Do not cut the yarn.

Step 14
SIDES: Continue working in the round, but now work A.2 without increasing (14 repeats of 6 stitches).

Step 15
When A.2 is finished, cut and fasten off the yarn.

Step 16
EDGE WITH CRAB STITCH: Work an edge around the top of the basket with crab stitch using 2 strands of dark red yarn (crab stitch = work single crochets from left to right). Cut and secure the ends.
