Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

MATERIALS PREPARATION: Use a large 8 mm hook so the moss stitch maintains a soft drape. You will need separate yarn balls for each color section; this prevents tangling when working independent blocks in the same row.

Step 2

Step 2

STARTING CHAIN: Make a base chain of 121 stitches alternating colors A (Midnight) and B (Sea) in groups of 17 chains. The color change is made in the last loop of the last stitch of each block.

Step 3

Step 3

SECTION 1 (MIDNIGHT AND SEA): In row 1, establish the pattern: 1 sc, ch 1, skip 1 stitch. Repeat this integrating color changes every 17 stitches. At the end of the row, you will have 119 stitches forming the board base.

Step 4

Step 4

MASTERING MOSS STITCH: On even rows, work the sc into the chain space of the previous row. This creates that characteristic interlocking texture that looks like knitting. Repeat the Section 1 rows until completing 16 rows.

Step 5

Step 5

SECTION 2 (SEA AND IVORY): Introduce Color C (Ivory) replacing Color A. Work another 16 row blocks keeping Color B as the secondary base. Keep the change yarns on the wrong side for a clean finish.

Step 6

Step 6

SECTION 3 AND 4: Continue alternating color blocks as instructed. Section 3 combines Ivory with Midnight, and Section 4 returns to Midnight and Sea. Repeating these sections will give the blanket its total length of 160 cm.

Step 7

Step 7

COLOR CHANGE TECHNIQUE: Always remember to close the last sc of a block with the new color. Do not cut the yarn if the same color is used in the block directly above; carry it carefully or use independent yarn balls for each color column.

Step 8

Step 8

FINAL FINISHING: Once all sections are completed, fasten off and use a yarn needle to weave in all excess strands within the dense moss stitch fabric. The 8 mm yarn thickness will make the blanket very warm.
