Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

We use the abbreviations: dc (double crochet), Cluster (3 dc in a space), Corner Inc (Cluster, 3 ch, Cluster), R (round), sl st (slip stitch) and ch (chain).

Step 2

Step 2

The starting 3 ch of each R count as the first dc. Always ch 1 between Clusters. We will work into the chain spaces (not the stitches), except for the joining sl st.

Step 3

Step 3

ROUND 1 (Base): Ch 64 and join with 1 sl st (without twisting the chain). Ch 3, and in the same ch, make 1 Corner Inc. Continue the sequence: ch 1, skip 3 ch, 1 Cluster (rep 2 more times). Ch 1, skip 3 ch.

Step 4

Step 4

ROUND 1 (Closure): Make 1 Corner Inc in the next ch. Continue with the sequence (ch 1, skip 3 ch, 1 Cluster) x3, finishing with ch 1, skip 3 ch. You should have 4 Corner Inc and 12 Clusters. Join with 1 sl st to the first st.

Step 5

Step 5

ROUND 2 (No color change): Turn your work. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1 (first Cluster). Work 1 Cluster in each border space (1 ch) and 1 Corner Inc in each corner space (3 ch). Always ch 1 before the next space. Join with 1 sl st.

Step 6

Step 6

ROUND 2 (With color change): Cut yarn and change. Turn, insert the new color in the nearest corner with sl st. Make 1 Corner Inc (ch 3, 2 dc, 3 ch, 1 Cluster). Continue with 1 Cluster in each border space and 1 Corner Inc in each corner. Join with 1 sl st.

Step 7

Step 7

ROUNDS 3-6 (Basic Pattern): If not changing color: Turn your work. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1 (first Cluster). Work 1 Cluster in each border space and 1 Corner Inc in each corner (4 increases per R). Join with 1 sl st.

Step 8

Step 8

ROUNDS 3-6 (With color change): Cut yarn and change. Turn, insert the new color in the nearest corner with sl st. Make 1 Corner Inc. Continue with 1 Cluster in each border space and 1 Corner Inc in each corner. Join with 1 sl st.

Step 9

Step 9

ROUND 7 (Corner Reduction): Cut and change color (if applicable). Turn, start with 1 Corner Inc. **Only increase in the top and bottom corners**. In the **side corners** (the shoulder ones), work only 1 Cluster, no increase. Join with 1 sl st.

Step 10

Step 10

ROUNDS 8-28 (Poncho Length): Turn your work and insert the new color (if changing). Start with 1 Corner Inc. Work 1 Cluster in each border space and 1 Corner Inc only in the two remaining corners (top and bottom). Finish with 1 sl st.

Step 11

Step 11

FINISHING: You can crochet more Rounds if you want a longer length. When you finish, fasten off all loose ends and your poncho will be ready.
