Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

THE SQUARES (MOTIFS): With the 5.5 mm hook, crochet 14 squares of 5 rounds each. Adjust tension so each round matches a color change in the variegated yarn. Each square should measure approx. 15 cm.

Step 2

Step 2

JOINING MOTIFS: Lay the motifs flat and join them using Color B (solid yarn) and the large hook. Insert the hook into the back loops of both squares to create a flat, decorative seam with slip stitches.

Step 3

Step 3

BODY AND STRAPS: Fold the piece in half and close the sides with sc. For the straps, use the 4 mm hook and crochet two strips of 92 sc (6 rows wide) to ensure they are sturdy and don't stretch too much.

Step 4

Step 4

DRAWSTRING EDGE: At the top, crochet a row of 'eyelets' alternating 3 dc and skipping 2 stitches. This will allow the drawstring to pass through later. Finish with two rounds of sc to firm up the edge.

Step 5

Step 5

THE FLAP: Crochet a trapezoid with Color B starting with 28 dc. Gradually decrease at the ends following the 3-dc group pattern until only 2 groups remain. Sew the flap centered on the back.

Step 6

Step 6

HANDLE AND DRAWSTRING: Create a small top handle by folding a 24 sc strip in half. For the drawstring, crochet a 140-stitch chain using double strands so it's thick and slides easily through the eyelets.

Step 7

Step 7

LINING FABRICATION: Cut two fabric rectangles. Sew the sides and create 'square corners' at the base to give the backpack depth. Fold the top edge twice for a clean, professional finish.

Step 8

Step 8

FINAL ASSEMBLY: Insert the lining into the backpack (wrong sides together). Join it to the crochet edge using hand blanket stitch. Thread the drawstring through the eyelets and knot the ends. Ready to use!
