Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

MATERIALS: Hook 6 mm, tapestry needle. Colors: A (1 skein), B (2 skeins), C (2 skeins), D (1 skein). 10 cm cardboard for tassels.

Step 2

CL STITCH (3 dc Cluster): (Yo, insert, yo, pull through 2) three times in same st. Close all 4 loops on hook.

Step 3

FULL SQUARES (R1): Make 50. With A, ch 6, join. Ch 6 (tr, ch 3), tr in ring, *ch 3, tr*. Repeat 6 times. Join and change to B.

Step 4

FULL SQUARES (R2): With B, ch 3, CL in 1st sp. (ch 2, CL) in same sp, ch 2. *(CL, ch 2, CL) in next sp, ch 2*. Repeat. Join and change to C.

Step 5

FULL SQUARES (R3, Corner): With C, in the corner space work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).

Step 6

FULL SQUARES (R3, Side): Ch 1, sc in next ch 2 sp. (ch 2, sc in next ch 2 sp) twice.

Step 7

FULL SQUARES (R3, End): Repeat Corner/Side 3 more times. Join with sl st to initial ch sp. Fasten off and weave ends.

Step 8

HALF SQUARES (R1): Make 11. With A, ch 6, join. Ch 6 (tr, ch 3), tr in ring, *ch 3, tr*. Repeat 2 more times. Final tr in ring. Fasten off.

Step 9

HALF SQUARES (R2): RS always facing. With B, CL in 1st ch 3 sp, ch 2. *(CL, ch 2, CL) in next sp, ch 2*. Repeat 2 times. CL in last sp. Fasten off.

Step 10

HALF SQUARES (R3, Start): RS always facing. With C, 3 dc in 1st CL, ch 1, sc in next ch 2 sp.

Step 11

HALF SQUARES (R3, Center): (ch 2, sc in next ch 2 sp) twice. Ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp (Corner).

Step 12

HALF SQUARES (R3, End): Ch 1, sc in next ch 2 sp. (ch 2, sc in next ch 2 sp) twice. Ch 1, 3 dc in last CL. Fasten off and weave ends.

Step 13

JOINING (Diagram): Join full and half squares following placement diagram. Use flat slip stitch join.

Step 14

JOINING (Technique): With D, standing sl st on hook. Insert into back loop (BL) of left corner st and BL of right corner st.

Step 15

JOINING (sl st): Yo with yarn behind both squares. Pull through 3 loops on hook. 1st sl st finished.

Step 16

JOINING (Direction): Seam the square rows in one direction, then the opposite rows. Needle goes in BL of left st, then BL of right st.

Step 17

BORDER (Start): With D, join with sl st at any st on the outer edge. Ch 1. Work ONLY in back loops (BL).

Step 18

BORDER (Body): 1 sc in each st. Use sl st to join over shawl seams. Work 3 sc in each corner.

Step 19

BORDER (End): Join with sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off and weave ends.

Step 20

TASSELS (Make 3): Tie one tassel to each of the 3 corners of the shawl. Wrap yarn D around 10 cm cardboard (50 times).

Step 21

TASSELS (Knot 1): Cut 30.5 cm of yarn D. Insert needle and pass under threads at top edge. Pull tight and make a knot.

Step 22

TASSELS (Cut): Cut the yarn loops at the bottom edge of the cardboard.

Step 23

TASSELS (Knot 2): Cut 15 cm of yarn D. Wrap it tightly 4 cm below the top knot. Make a secure knot.

Step 24

TASSELS (Finish): Weave center knot ends into the center of the tassel. Trim tassel ends evenly.
