Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

Make a slip knot forming an 'e'. Chain 4 and insert the yarn into the center of the first stitch.

Step 2

Step 2

You should have a semicircle. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through both stitches. Now you have the central ring.

Step 3

Step 3

Chain three stitches. Wrap the yarn around your hook and pass it through the center of the initial ring. Catch the yarn from behind and pull it to the front. Now you should have three loops on your hook.

Step 4

Step 4

Double crochet: Yarn over once, pull through two of the three loops. Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops.

Step 5

Step 5

Crochet another double crochet and you will have your first 'granny square'. For the corners, you need two chains and three double crochets. Continue until you have made all 4 corners.

Step 6

Step 6

To complete the 1st round, make the last two chains and then create a slip stitch. To do this, count three chains from the first one of that round, insert the hook under both loops, catch the yarn from behind, and pull it through the entire stitch.

Step 7

Step 7

Turn the square and begin the 2nd round. There should be 4 gaps from the 1st round. In each corner gap, crochet: 3 DC, 2 chains, and 3 DC.

Step 8

Step 8

After finishing one corner, move to the next and repeat 3 DC, 2 chains, and 3 DC. Once you complete the round, finish with a slip stitch as you did at the end of the first round.

Step 9

Step 9

Turn your square for the 3rd round. Start with the central gap, making 3 DC. Then move to the corner gap and crochet 3 DC, 2 chains, and 3 DC. Continue this pattern: 3 DC, 2 CH and 3 DC for the corners, and 3 DC for the central gaps.

Step 10

Step 10

Secure the 3rd (and last) round with a slip stitch. To finish, chain one more. Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm tail, and pull the end through the loop.
