Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Materials and Tools: Super Bulky weight yarn (3 skeins), 9 mm crochet hook, tapestry needle. Skill Level: Easy.
Step 2
Abbreviations and Special Stitches: ch (chain), sc (single crochet), dc (double crochet), hdc (half double crochet), sl st (slip stitch). Special: bpdc (back post double crochet), fpdc (front post double crochet).
Step 3
Pattern Notes: Work 4 squares (15x15 cm) separately in joined rounds, then join them together to form the hood. Finally, work ribbing around the neck and front opening.
Step 4
Granny Squares (Make 4) - Rnd 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) 3 times; join with hdc to top of beg ch-3 (12 dc, 4 sps).
Step 5
Squares - Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first sp (formed by hdc). *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each of next 3 sps*. 3 dc in first sp, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3 (24 dc).
Step 6
Squares - Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in first sp. *3 dc in next sp between groups, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp*. Repeat from * 2 more times. 3 dc in next sp between groups, 3 dc in first sp. Join with hdc to top of beg ch-3 (36 dc).
Step 7
Squares - Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sp. *1 sc in each st to next corner, 4 sc in corner sp*. Repeat from * 2 more times. 1 sc in each st to first corner, 2 sc in first sp. Join with sl st to first st (52 sc). Fasten off.
Step 8
Finishing and Joining: Lay squares flat following the hood shape (crown, back, and one on each side). With wrong sides together, join edges through both layers using sl st in each st until the structure is formed.
Step 9
Neck Ribbing - Base (Rnd 1): On the right side, join yarn to free corner of front square, ch 9 (under chin), join with sl st to free corner of back square. Along bottom edge: ch 2 (counts as dc), 1 dc in each st and each ch of the joining around. Join with sl st (48 dc).
Step 10
Neck Ribbing - Rnds 2-7: Ch 2 (counts as bpdc), 1 fpdc around next st. *1 bpdc around next, 1 fpdc around next*, repeat around. Join with sl st. Fasten off after Rnd 7.
Step 11
Front Edging - Rnd 1: Join yarn with sl st in any st on front edge. Ch 2 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in each st, in seams, corners, and each free loop of the chin chain. Join with sl st (52 dc).
Step 12
Front Edging - Rnd 2 & Finishing: Ch 2 (counts as bpdc), 1 fpdc around next st. *1 bpdc, 1 fpdc*, repeat around. Join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.
