Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Step 1

BASE AND INITIAL RING: Chain 71. In row 1, work 70 single crochet. Join the first and last stitch to form a circle, making sure it isn't twisted and the right side faces out.

Step 2

Step 2

MASTERING THE WAISTCOAT STITCH: Unlike normal single crochet, insert the hook right in the middle of the 'V' (the legs) of the previous row's stitch. This creates the knit-look texture. Work in a spiral without closing rounds.

Step 3

Step 3

BEANIE HEIGHT: Work 70 waistcoat stitches in each round from 3 to 28. Use a stitch marker to identify the end of each round, as it's easy to lose track when working in a spiral.

Step 4

Step 4

STARTING DECREASES (R29): Begin shaping the crown. In round 29, decrease by working 2 waistcoat stitches together, followed by 5 normal stitches. Repeat this throughout the round to end with 60 stitches.

Step 5

Step 5

CROWN PROGRESSION: Alternate a decrease round with a normal stitch round (rounds 30-34). This allows the hat to close smoothly and aesthetically without creating excessive lumps.

Step 6

Step 6

FINAL CLOSURE (R35-R41): From round 35, decreases become more frequent (every 2 stitches, then every 1). In rounds 39 and 41, decrease across all stitches until only 5 remain.

Step 7

Step 7

TOP GATHERING: Cut the yarn leaving a long tail. With the yarn needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 5 stitches and pull firmly to close the top hole completely.

Step 8

Step 8

FINAL TOUCH (OPTIONAL): You can add a yarn or faux fur pom-pom on top for a more wintry style. Weave in all loose ends on the inside for a flawless finish.
