Step 1

Materials and Sizes: We will use 900 g of thick cotton cord or T-shirt yarn. 8.0 mm crochet hook and appropriate tapestry needle. The pattern includes instructions for two sizes: Bath Mat (53 x 64 cm) and Large Rug (61 x 81 cm).

Step 2

Step 2

Special Stitches: We will work Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) and Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc) around the posts of the stitches from the previous row. This creates the 3D basketweave texture. The post stitches alternate order every 4 rows.

Step 3

Step 3

Instructions - Rows 1 to 4: Row 1: Work 38 (46) foundation double crochets. Row 2: Turn, stacked sc (or ch 2), *(4 fpdc, 4 bpdc), repeat until 5 sts remain, 4 fpdc, 1 hdc in last st. Row 3: Turn, stacked sc, *(4 bpdc, 4 fpdc), repeat until 5 sts remain, 4 bpdc, 1 hdc. Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Step 4

Step 4

Instructions - Rows 5 to 8: Row 5: Repeat Row 2. Row 6: Turn, stacked sc, *(4 bpdc, 4 fpdc), repeat until 5 sts remain, 4 bpdc, 1 hdc. Row 7: Repeat Row 2. Row 8: Repeat Row 6. These rows set the first section of the basketweave texture.

Step 5

Step 5

Instructions - Rows 9 to 12: Row 9: Repeat Row 6. Row 10: Repeat Row 2. Row 11: Repeat Row 6. Row 12: Repeat Row 2. The order of the post stitches is reversed to create the interlocking blocks effect.

Step 6

Step 6

Finishing the Rug: For Bath Mat (53x64 cm): Repeat Rows 5-12, then Rows 5-8, and finish by repeating Rows 9-11. Fasten off. For Large Rug (61x81 cm): Repeat Rows 5-12 three more times, then repeat Rows 5-7. Fasten off. Apply non-slip backing or hot glue spots on the reverse.
