Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
Materials and Sizing: We will use thick T-shirt yarn, rope, or very thick yarn in a main base color and three accent colors. 10.0 mm hook, stitch markers, and a large tapestry needle. Finished diameter: 90 cm (35.4 inches).

Step 2
Start and Rounds 1 to 4: Start with magic ring and base color. Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring. Place marker. Rnd 2: *(2 sc, inc) repeat around [12 sc]. Rnd 3: *(1 sc, inc) repeat [18]. On the 3rd stitch, change to the first accent color for 12 stitches. Rnd 4: *(2 sc, inc) around with base color [24].

Step 3
Rounds 5 to 8: Rnd 5: *(3 sc, inc) around [30]. On stitch 20, change to accent color for 12 sts. Rnd 6: *(4 sc, inc) [36]. On stitch 12 change back to base color. Rnd 7: *(5 sc, inc) [42]. Rnd 8: *(6 sc, inc) [48], changing color between the first and second markers.

Step 4
Rounds 9 to 15: Continue in a spiral increasing progressively in each round: Rnd 9: (7 sc, inc) x6 [54]. Rnd 10: (8 sc, inc) x6 [60]. Rnd 11: (9 sc, inc) x6 [66]. Rnd 12: (10 sc, inc) x6 [72]. Rnd 13: (11 sc, inc) x6 [78]. Rnd 14: (12 sc, inc) x6 [84]. Rnd 15: (13 sc, inc) x6 [90].

Step 5
Growth to Round 29: Repeat the spiral pattern and keep working with the same increase sequence until completing Round 29. Incorporate the additional colors in sections as desired. If the rug curls upward, add some free increases; if it waves, skip some increases.

Step 6
Final Border: Rnd 30: To create a thick and neat border, work one round of sl st in back loops only (BLO) of each stitch around the rug. Join with invisible sl st, fasten off, and weave in ends.
