Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
Abbreviations: MR = Magic Ring, ch = chain, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, inc = increase.

Step 2
Center (Rnds 1-3): Rnd 1: MR, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) and 11 dc. Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st. Rnd 3: 2 dc in each st (End Rnd 3: 48 dc). Join each rnd with sl st.

Step 3
Body - Openwork Rounds: In rounds 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24, work: (1 dc, ch 1, skip 1 base st) around to create the characteristic spaces.

Step 4
Body - Solid Rounds: Between openwork rnds, work 3-round blocks of dc, making progressively spaced increases to keep the circle flat.

Step 5
Edging (Rnd 28): Form waves around the rug by working *1 sc, skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st*, repeat and join with sl st.

Step 6
Finishing: Weave in all ends securely with a tapestry needle and block the rug slightly to define and flatten its circular shape.
