Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
PREPARATION AND CHAIN: Use chunky yarn and a 10 mm hook. Chain 70. Ensure the chain is not twisted before joining with a slip stitch to form the 86.5 cm circle.

Step 2
INITIAL PUFF: To start each round, ch 2, yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop, repeat once more and close. This 'Initial Puff' replaces traditional turning chains so the seam remains invisible.

Step 3
STANDARD PUFF STITCH: Yarn over, insert in stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops). Repeat this two more times in the same spot until you have 7 loops on the hook. Close all together with a final yarn over.

Step 4
ROUND 1: Crochet an initial puff, then alternate [ch 1, skip 1 base chain, 1 puff stitch]. At the end of the round, you should have exactly 35 puff motifs. Join with a slip stitch.

Step 5
ROUND 2 (STAGGERED STITCHES): Slip stitch to position yourself in the first chain space. Make the initial puff there. The puff stitches in this round should sit 'inside' the gaps from the previous round.

Step 6
MAINTAINING TENSION: It's vital not to pull the puff strands too tight. Pull the yarn up so all loops are the same height (approx. 1.5 cm) before closing the stitch.

Step 7
COWL GROWTH: Repeat round 2 identically until you reach round 13. This will give you a total height of approximately 24 cm, perfect for covering the neck and chin.

Step 8
CLOSING AND FINISHING: Cut the yarn leaving a 15 cm tail. Use the yarn needle to weave the end between the puff stitches. Being a chunky fabric, the end will be completely hidden.
