Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
BODY START: With the 5 mm hook, chain 44 + 2 (approx. 35 cm wide). Row 1 is worked entirely in double crochet (dc). This will be the total width of your scarf/back.

Step 2
CROSS STITCH (ROW 2): Crochet 3 dc, skip one stitch, crochet the next 3 dc, and then go back to crochet 1 dc in the skipped stitch. This technique creates the characteristic cross relief of the garment.

Step 3
RECTANGLE GROWTH: Alternate rows of simple double crochet with cross stitch rows until reaching 130 cm in length (size S/M). It's vital that the fabric is flexible so it wraps comfortably in front.

Step 4
SLEEVE START: Switch to the 4 mm hook. Without cutting the yarn, chain 46 (30 cm) perpendicular to the body edge. Here we will start the ribbed cuff.

Step 5
VERTICAL RIBBING: Work back over the chain with single crochet. For the following rows, crochet sc in the back loop only (BLO). This creates the spring or 'ribbing' effect that fits the arm.

Step 6
BODY ATTACHMENT: Each time you finish a sleeve row, attach it to the body edge with 2 slip stitches. To make the sleeve more elegant and narrow, skip one body stitch every two rows.

Step 7
SLEEVE CLOSURE AND SYMMETRY: Upon completing the arm circumference, close the sleeve into a tube using slip stitches on the right side. Repeat the exact same process at the other end of the scarf.

Step 8
FINAL FINISHES: Reinforce the underarm join with a few extra stitches using the tapestry needle. Weave in all loose ends. Your hybrid garment is ready to be worn wrapped or open.
