Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Base - Rounds 1 and 2: Ch 67. R1: ch 3, 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next 65 sts, 5 dc in last ch. On opposite side: dc in next 65 sts, 2 dc in next st. Join with sl st. [140 sts] R2: ch 3, 2 dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 67 sts, (2 dc in next st) x3, dc in next 67 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st. Join with sl st. [152 sts]

Step 2

Base - Rounds 3 to 8: R3: ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 69 sts, (2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) x2, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 69 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts. Join with sl st. [164 sts] R4-R8: Continue increasing at ends following the same logic to obtain 224 stitches at the end of Round 8.

Step 3

Body - Diamond Pattern: With 224 stitches, work in rounds without increasing. Closing sl st does not count as a stitch. Follow the diamond lace pattern (R1-R32) combining dc and ch spaces to create the structured mesh according to the diamond lace chart.

Step 4

Body - Final Height: After completing Round 32 of the diamond pattern, repeat the indicated rounds in the structural lace sequence to reach the desired total height of the bag, maintaining 224 stitches around.

Step 5

Upper Edge - Rounds 1 to 4: Work the finishing edge in single crochet. R1: ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in each of the 224 sts around. Join with sl st. R2-R4: Repeat Round 1 of sc in each base stitch.

Step 6

Upper Edge - Round 5 (Rings): R5: Integrate 4 flat metal rings. Ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, 7 sc around the first ring, sc in next 41 sts, 7 sc around the second ring, sc in next 57 sts, 7 sc around the third ring, sc in next 41 sts, 7 sc around the fourth ring, sc in next 45 sts. Join with sl st.

Step 7

Shoulder Straps (Make 2): Worked flat separately. R1: Ch 8. sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. [7 sc] R2: sc in each of the 7 sts, ch 1, turn. Repeat R2 until the strap measures 50 cm (20") long (approx. 115 rows, 3.2 cm/1.25" wide). Leave a long tail for sewing.

Step 8

Assembly and Finishing: Block the oval base with steam before assembling. If desired, use the base as a template to cut fabric lining. Sew strap ends firmly to metal rings. Weave in and trim all loose ends on the wrong side.
